Role and responsibilities of database administrators are incredibly diverse and their responsibilities may vary from organization to organization.
There are mostly two types of DBA's in the IT industry: Development Database Administrator and Production Database Administrator.
Development database administrators work closely with the developers and are involved in detail designing of the product, testing and at time reviewing the codes and scripts provided by the developers. On the other hand, the Production DBA is responsible to maintain and check the performance of databases within the organization.
Apart from this the DBA's are responsible for the following tasks:

A DBA should have good web programming skills, fair knowledge of HTML and ASP in either VBScript or JavaScript. Well versed in DBMS and the Query language SQL.
Apart from the technical skills the DBA must possess the following skill set:
- Ability to analyze the requirements of the project
- Identify the problems and provide alternative solutions to it that is nothing but trouble shooting
- Should be able to impart training to other employees as and when required
- Should be able to learn new technologies quickly and implement them
- Good mathematics and excellent communication skills are always and added advantage.
- A bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Information technology is mandatory
- M.I.S is preferable, as a specialization will always add weight to your resume
